About the Psalms

Psalms has more chapters and more verses than any other book of the Bible: 150 psalms and 2,461 verses, about 8% of all the verses in Scripture. The psalms were written to be sung and prayed, and they cover what people bring to God: praise, thanks, grief, fear, anger and trust.

Each psalm is a single poem, so one verse rarely shows where the whole is going. Many psalms begin in distress and end in praise. After you draw a verse, press “Show surrounding verses” and then “Read all of Psalm…” to see the complete psalm.

About half of the psalms carry David's name in their headings. Others are linked to Asaph, the sons of Korah, Solomon and Moses. The King James Version prints those headings above verse 1, outside the verse numbering, so they do not appear in the verses drawn here.
